In 2022, we had the pleasure of launching 11 county websites in Iowa, including one for Boone County.

The Boone County website features a modern and colorful redesign in a user-friendly format. To begin the project, our team met with Boone County officials and department heads for a kick-off meeting to discuss website features, pain points on the current site, and branding. While our standard website development timeline consists of 12 to 14 weeks, we’re glad we could meet Boone County’s tight turn-around time and launch the site just seven weeks later.

After concluding Boone County’s legacy website was failing to meet user needs at nearly every turn, the daunting task of starting fresh was made quite simple with the intuitive flow built into our new Neapolitan Labs-inspired website.

To bring the new site together and unified in design and purpose, we met one on one with each county department to better understand their needs and what content they needed to keep or update, and any new features they needed to better serve county residents. As a result, the website is now consistent in design on every department page while allowing each department to easily communicate its unique services and duties to the public.

The new Boone County website (right) features a refreshed color palette, simplified navigation, a homepage video header, and brings quick links above the fold.

We utilized the kick-off meeting feedback to refresh the county’s color palette with brighter colors, consisting of blue, orange, and green. Drone video is used on the homepage to promote county attractions and landmarks.

Beyond its design, our main goal was to make the site intuitive. To simplify navigation and help residents find information quicker, we narrowed the site’s main navigation menu from six to five options, the main one being “Departments,” housing all of the county’s offices in one convenient location.

Part of the navigation includes the “Apply” page, created to help residents quickly find county applications, permits, and forms. We also improved site search with our system that provides a dropdown of options based on users’ search matching page titles, descriptions, keywords, FAQs, and more.

We are thankful for Boone County’s trust in us to develop the new website and look forward to assisting more counties!

Brian and his enthusiastic team at Neapolitan Labs hands down deserve 10 stars!
